KDOR is seeking a motivated lawyer that is focused on taxation associated with business and local and county government. The position involves analyzing: 1) business and agricultural income and expenses to develop methods for valuing ongoing enterprises; and 2) consideration of land and building sales to develop local and statewide trends for fair market value. You will represent the Department before the Board of Tax Appeals, as well as in State and Federal district courts and appellate courts, on matters related to property taxation and sales and income tax collection. Additionally, you will provide litigation support for cases involving the State, including matters under Sec. 1983 and the Kansas Tort Claims Act. Assistant City Attorney - City of Lawrence, Kansas
The staff attorney provides legal advice and support to elected officials and City staff, including members of the Police Department and the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department. Key duties include drafting ordinances, conducting legal and policy research, writing legal memoranda, providing legal training to City staff, monitoring and responding to recent developments in law, appearing in court on behalf of the City, responding to calls from officers after regular business hours, and attending evening meetings, as needed. The Assistant City Attorney handles legal matters for the City involving general municipal law, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, open records law, and contract law.

Qualifications:
This position requires two years of legal work in municipal government or an equivalent level of experience, with a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing of the bar of the State of Kansas. Must have excellent legal research skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong analytical skills. Must also be able to manage both long- and short-term assignments in a dynamic work environment. Working knowledge of office procedures and equipment, including Microsoft Office. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in government who also possess civil and/or criminal law practice experience. Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license. The successful candidate will also pass the background check and post-offer physical and drug screen.
